The Kibogora Maternity and Women’s Hospital is a state-of-the-art facility that seeks to alleviate overcrowding by adding a new maternity ward at an existing hospital campus in Eastern Rwanda. Reacting to the steep, densely developed landscape of the campus, the new ward is cut into the slope at its highest point. This new perch allows for controlled passive ventilation and day lighting throughout the building. Additionally, the new site allows for better access to patient programming on upper floors while the doctoral training program is on the lower floors directly accessible to the larger campus. In addition to the new clinical program, a major feature of the project includes site planning that can accommodate the large number of family members that accompany their loved ones during their stay. A bar of program has been dedicated to those requirements with the ability for families to prepare meals and have access to laundry and sanitary facilities.
