village health works
The Nutrition Center at Village Health Works is the centerpiece of the organization’s work to reduce malnutrition in nearby communities. To better affiliate itself with the programmatic mission, the building takes a cue from nearby screening for plant seedlings to house a community gathering area, demonstration kitchen, and facilities for the community and patients’ families from the greater clinical campus. Oriented on an east-west axis to shade the equatorial sun, the simple sloping sheds descend the hillside supported by V shaped columns and light trusses to cover the three main programmatic elements. The Nutrition Center is also the site of Village Health Works’ food distribution program, which distributes food grown on the terraces surrounding its medical campus to patients and their families. This project was recently completed with support from the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund and Global Affairs Canada.
